Dissection

March 9, 2010 Mussel Lab

This week we focused on toxicity and mussels to test the levels of response of a particular protein. We removed the gills and the pancreas thing of the mussels, but our professor decided to use only the gill tissue for data (pancreas is more difficult to get, higher risk of contamination). We did an RNA extraction which releases the RNA from the cells by lysing the cells and lysing the nucleus. The process took over 3.5 hours, I think. I'm quite tired.
