October 9 | Vienna
This is a present to you, or maybe from you, or maybe to us both, because even though I don't drink coffee, it feels closer to home. There just aren't any in Hungary.
The first thing that I saw on leaving the West train station in Vienna was a "Chinese restaurant". This was very soon after, and they came around every few blocks, alternating Starbucks and McDonalds.
I'm writing from a common space on our floor of the hostel. The rooms themselves do not have Internet. I will have to go out to the lobby to talk to you tomorrow.
Awww, I don't want to be associated with Starbucks! I like independent coffeehouses, but they aren't an option around here. While I like the reminder of home which I do think about when I'm at the local Starbucks, I don't like the thought of a city losing its unique feel. I went to the Starbucks headquarters once. It's amazing how widespread the corporation has become.
ReplyDeleteI like them too, that is, where one can get tea and a piece of cake.
ReplyDeleteWhat I felt when I saw this Starbucks is that Vienna is more like home than Budapest, and it is a lot different. But I don't recall any Starbucks in Budapest.
